Chapter 14

Nae and I left out of the bathroom at the same time, I went to get all of the men; they were in the backyard. We needed to sing happy birthday to Na-vayha, cut the cake, then send everyone home. I had enough drama for one day, I was mentally drained. Tony went to check on Tay in the bathroom, while everyone else gathered in the kitchen. After we had cake, I let the kids run around the house for another hour. I didn’t want their fun to be ruined over the drama that had happened before I called their parents to come get them.

Trina gave Na-vayha her bath for the night and my baby fell right out. The other three, Jasmine, lil’ Jay and Ja-corey thought they were grown. They went down to the movie theater with my mother to watch a movie, after all the running they did today. I couldn’t understand how they weren’t sleeping right along with Na-vayha. Me and my crew were in the kitchen cleaning, while all the men were in the living room, watching a basketball game, drinking, smoking, talking shit to one another about which team was going to win the game.

Everyone was chilling and having a good time. Next thing I heard was rapid gunfire. It sounded like the army was outside turning my house into Swiss cheese. All the ladies in the kitchen hit the floor, until the gunfire stopped. Once I was sure it was over, Trina and I hopped up off the floor and split up. She took the steps, two at a time, to go check on Na-vayha, while I ran my ass downstairs to check on the other kids and my mother.

I was hysterical; I was yelling while running down the steps, “Mom, is everyone okay down there? Mom, Mom, Mom?” I was freaking out, because Tray had just pulled a fuckin’ drive-by with my kids in the house. I swear that the drive-by shit was supposed to end once I moved out of the hood. Before I reached the bottom step, I heard my mother yell, “Nell, calm down! We all okay! The kids are just shaken up a little that’s all! What the hell is going on around here?” My mother yelled.

When I reached the theater, I checked everyone out to make sure that they were straight. I didn’t have time to answer my mother’s questions, so I ignored her. I had to make it back upstairs to make sure Na-vayha and my husband was okay. When I made back upstairs, I met Trina at the door. She was on her way downstairs with Na-vayha in her arms. I snatched my baby out of her hands and checked her over just to make sure that she was good.

“She’s okay. I checked her out, already!”

“Oh, a’ight. I was just making sure!” I handed the baby back to Trina and she walked down the stairs to be with the other kids and my mother.

My next stop was the living room to check on my hubby.
